In February of 2017, UCR owner, Guy Darienzo, visited Costa Rica in hopes of creating new sustainable coffee partnerships and to meet some of our current direct trade coffee partners.
Guy met with Jon and Marianella. Together, the couple runs their own coffee farm in Costa Rica, Cafe Con Amor. After getting involved in farming, Jon and Marianella were struck by how hard most farmers work, only to sell their coffee for prices that could not even sustain the most basic lifestyle.
To help change this, Jon and Marianella developed “Farmers Project”. Café con Amor and Farmers Project specialty coffees are exported directly to roasters who appreciate outstanding coffee, who believe in paying fair prices and who value a direct relationship with the producers.
In 2016, UCR introduced 4 delicious, honey processed coffees from the Farmer’s Project farms, Finca El Greco and Finca Sircof. On this trip, Guy was able to meet the owners of these farms and put a face to the names of the hardworking farmers and pickers. He was also introduced to a new family and farm, the Zalmari Coffee Estate.
The estate lies in the micro-region of Cachi, Orosi Valley in Costa Rica. Four generations of the family have worked to maintain a balance of environmentally friendly practices, support for the community and top-quality coffee.
ZCE is run by fourth generation Cecilia (Ceci) Genis and her mother, Marigold Murray. The estate was the first to obtain the Women Care Certification, a new certification designed to improve the sustainable lifestyle for women involved in the cultivation, processing, trading, and exporting of coffee.
Ceci’s next goal is to build an onsite child care center, where the kids of the coffee pickers can have a safe place to play. UCR will donate $1 for each 12-oz. bag of Zalmari Estate coffee sold to ZCE’s child care center fund. To purchase a bag and help this great cause, click here.
