Saugatuck, Michigan, June 22, 2016

Uncommon Coffee Roasters (UCR) has been in the specialty coffee business for more than 20 years. Their café opened in 1994, a few years later they began roasting their own beans and eventually expanded into a second location to provide wholesale coffee services. They now provide specialty small batch roasted coffee and coffee products to over 200 businesses, both small and large, throughout the country. Most recently, seeing a demand for convenient and high quality RTD coffee, the company launched their popular Cold Brew Coffee in dairy style cartons.

UCR also recognized a need for a sustainable and flavorful single serve coffee cup. Currently, to withstand the brewing process, a majority of single serve cups, also known as K-Cups, are made with four different layers of specialized plastic and topped with plastic foil, making them virtually un-recyclable and not biodegradable. In 2013, Green Mountain produced 8.3 billion K-Cups, enough to wrap around the equator 10.5 times, a majority of these ended up in landfills. *

Seeking a sustainable option for their single serve coffee line, UCR partnered with ProLine Coffee, to become the first on the market to offer a 2.0 Keurig compatible 100% Compostable option using the Compostable UpShot. The Compostable UpShot brews an incomparable cup of coffee. Not only does the capsule hold more coffee than standard K-Cups, but the unique design encourages an extraction like no other single-serve cup available.Lid-and-filter

The compostable UpShot meets all ASTM standards of composability, but most importantly, goes beyond all standards for an incredible cup of Uncommon Coffee. Made out of a Bamboo Resin and corn-based PLA material, the compostable capsule and lidding film can withstand the pressure and heat of your single-serve brewer, but still compost down to natural matter at your local Commercial Composting Facility within 90 days.

First and foremost, UCR cares about providing people with high quality coffee. Second, they wanted an environmentally friendly option that fulfilled customers’ needs for convenience without compromising the flavor of the coffee. UCR’s Compostable Single Serve Coffee Cup encompasses all of the above. It’s landfill free, sustainable and leaves a positive footprint on the environment all while brewing a flavorful cup of coffee that you deserve.

UCR’s Compostable Single Serve Coffee cups are currently available in House Blend and Water Processed Decaf. They can be purchased from www.UncommonCoffeeRoasters.com, Amazon.com, and from the Uncommon Coffee Roasters café in downtown Saugatuck.
